Guildhall Square Southampton

Art Asia, as a part of Art in the Heart, is pleased to announce their partnership with The Nuffield Theatre to put on a summer festival of events in Guildhall Square – the Nuffield Playing Field.

Art at the Heart is led by a partnership of arts organisation in the City working with Southampton City Council – Art Asia, City Eye, John Hansard Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery, The Nuffield, Turner Sims and The Mayflower.
This distinctive partnership is behind some of the most exciting events seen in Southampton over recent years including Midsummer Dreams, Bollywood Baraat, Alive and Ablaze, The Sound of Silents, Barricade, Waterlitz and most recently KMA: Strange Attractors (the Anatomy of Dr Tulp) within Southampton Film Week 2013.

This summer, between 1 – 17 August, The Playing Field will be full of dance, film, music, visual art and theatre. The festival, celebrates the 50th anniversaries of both Nuffield Theatre and the City of Southampton.

This wonderful celebration will take place at a unique pop-up venue, Nuffield Playing Field, located in Guildhall Square at the heart of Southampton’s Cultural Quarter. The festival and pop-up venue are precursors to the opening of the new arts complex in 2016.

Festival events include: the world premiere of Nuffield’s newly commissioned play The Saints, charting the highs and lows of being a Southampton Football Club fan; Hampshire Youth Theatre’s new adaptation of War Horse author Michael Morpurgo’s The Best Christmas Present in the World; a series of film screenings curated by City Eye; a concert series presented by Turner Sims; a day of global music presented by Art Asia; a light installation by artist David Ward presented by John Hansard Gallery; Five of the Best performed by Mayflower Theatre Summer Youth Project and Stolen Wishes created by contemporary dance company ZoieLogic and featuring local young dancers, commissioned by Mayflower Theatre and The Point.
We will bring you the programme as soon as its announced.
