Voices of the Divine: Women Bauls of Bengal

Published on: 29 January 2026

Art Asia presents Mystic Melodies Divine Voices Celebrating the Bauls of Bengal, an evocative performance led by internationally acclaimed Baul singer Papia Ghosal. From Bengal to the world, this soul-stirring event celebrates the powerful voices of women Bauls, the mystic minstrels of Bengal whose music transcends borders, faiths, and time.

Rooted in spiritual folk traditions shaped by Sufism and the Hindu Bhakti movement, Baul music is renowned for its hypnotic rhythms and profound poetry. This performance honours the women who carry this timeless tradition, singing of love, freedom, and the divine within, with voices resonant with longing, harmony, and unity.

Speaking ahead of the event, Dahlia Jamil, Chief Executive of Art Asia, said:
“Mystic Melodies is a powerful celebration of women as carriers of spiritual knowledge and cultural memory. Through Papia Ghosal’s extraordinary artistry, we are honoured to share the living Baul tradition, one that speaks deeply to unity, humanity, and the divine, at a time when these voices are needed more than ever.”

Papia Ghosal is an international award-winning Baul singer, lyricist, poet, actor, and fine artist who has devoted over three decades to living and studying the Baul way of life under legendary masters Pandit Purna Das Baul Samrat and Sadhon Bairagi. Known for her raw, earthy voice, Papia performs with traditional Baul instruments including the ektara, dotara, dubki, ananda lohori, and ghungoor, offering audiences an immersive journey into the spiritual heart of Bengal.

Mystic Melodies offers a rare opportunity to experience the divine voices of women Bauls and the living soul of a centuries-old tradition.
