Join the Mela Parade! On Saturday 13th July, meet us on the ground floor of WestQuay Shopping Centre for the vibrant and colourful Mela Parade. At 12:30, the parade, filled with lively music and visual arts acts, will make its way to the Southampton Mela Festival in Hoglands Park.
What to Expect at the Parade
- Rajasthan Heritage Brass Band: Be enchanted by the vibrant and colourful music and dance from this renowned group, bringing the rich heritage of Rajasthan to life.
- Dolly the Giant Maharani Puppet: Created by Nutkhut, Dolly is an elegant and awe-inspiring figure that embodies the stories of the British South-Asian experience. Nutkhut’s mission is to animate these stories through captivating performances.
- Sonia Sabri’s Mughal Miniatures: Marvel at the beautiful peacock puppets inspired by traditional Indian and Persian miniature paintings. These puppets celebrate the glory of the Mughal period with a contemporary twist.
- Dandanakka Kalai Kuzhu Drummers: Feel the rhythm and energy of South Asian drumming that will accompany the parade.
- Chinese Dragon: Enjoy the visual spectacle of a Chinese dragon, adding an extra layer of excitement to the parade.
- Community Members: Join in the celebration with members of the community who will be parading alongside these incredible acts.
Parade Route
The parade will meet on the ground floor of WestQuay at 12:30 and exit by Waterstones, meeting outside with the Chinese Dragon, drummers and Dolly. It will head to the Bargate, walk up the precinct, and then turn right into Houndwell Road, arriving at Hoglands Park around 12:50, heading to the Main Stage for The Mayor to officially open the Southampton Mela Festival at 13:00.
Arrive Early for the Festival
If you prefer to head straight to the Southampton Mela Festival, the site opens at 11:00. You can grab a coffee, enjoy delicious food, visit the fairground and be ready to greet the parade as it arrives.
