Find out what’s on around the Southampton Mela Festival site

What’s happening on site?

In addition to the line up on our three stages, throughout the day there will be vibrant colourful acts entertaining the Mela crowds on site in Hoglands Park.

Mughal Miniatures

Mughal Miniatures is a lively outdoor performance, perfect for families, that pays homage to the beautiful Indian and Persian miniature painting tradition. The performers, dressed extravagantly, bring to life enchanting miniature realms through dance, music, and puppetry. Transport yourself to the royal court, dance in the rain, befriend mischievous peacocks, and embark on a forest hunt. However, our characters are tired of their confines and seek liberation with your assistance. Join us to witness their liberation from their traditional frames.

Indian miniature painting of the 9th and 10th century was hugely multicultural, drawing inspiration from many peoples and cultures. In the same way, this project, like all Sonia Sabri Company’s work, is about bringing different artists, forms and cultures into dialogue with each other and demonstrating their complementary nature. A poignant metaphor of our diverse society here in the UK and worldwide.

Nutkhut Giant Puppet

Dolly, the giant Maharini puppet will be joining our parade this year, and gracefully walking the site throught the day dressed in her elegant finery. Dolly is the creation of NutKhut. Nutkhut’s mission is to bring to life awe-inspiring stories of the British South-Asian experience. As an ideas-led, art focused performance company, they create work mixing performance, dance, film, participation and a distinctly British comedic sensibility and eccentricity.

Circus Acts & Fire Show

Circus company Storm in a Tea Cup will be on site all day. Be amazed by their mesmerizing multi-hoop performances and the enchanting stilt walkers who bring the magic of stilt walking to life. As the day turns to dusk, prepare to be captivated by their awe-inspiring fire extravaganza, a thrilling spectacle of fire and danger that will ignite your fascination. As the day turns to dusk head you’ll find this spectacle near the World Stage. Don’t miss out on this magical experience!

Beautiful South Asian Flags

Art Asia has worked with Arts University Bournemouth again this year on a project in conjunction with textile students to develop beautiful and vibrant flags that represent the Mela and South Asia. Art Asia thank all of the students for their wonderful designs, we are delighted to have them on display at the Mela.
